FAQs About Pruning

We provide the professional pruning and trimming care necessary to maintain and improve the health, appearance, and safety of trees in and around the Hudson Valley

Do You Need Tree & Shrub Pruning?

Wondering whether you need tree and shrub pruning? We'll give you five great reasons!

  • 1

    Safer Trees

When we remove limbs that interfere with wires, building facades, gutters, roofs, chimneys, or windows—or that obstruct streets or sidewalks—we eliminate branches that can cause damage or break off and fall unexpectedly.

  • 2

    Healthier Trees

Dead or weak limbs pose a hazard or may lead to decay. Diseased or insect-infested limbs are bad news for your trees' health.

  • 3

    Stronger Trees

Creating better tree structure helps lessen wind resistance and reduces the potential for storm damage. Training young trees to maintain a healthy shape as they grow will help them stay strong as they get older.

  • 4

    More Attractive Trees

Pruning can improve the shape or silhouette of the tree itself: shaping involves removing branches or thinning them out to increase light penetration in order to make sure your yard looks its best!

  • 5

    Longer-Lived Trees

It can improve the shape or silhouette of the tree itself: shaping involves removing branches or thinning them out to increase light penetration in order to make sure your yard looks its best!

Experience Matters

Whether it’s a mature tree that needs corrective or preventive pruning, a young tree that needs pruning to develop a strong structure and desirable form, or a landscape shrub, your plants will benefit from pruning by a professional arborist.

Proper pruning takes knowledge and experience in both the science and art of pruning - something our ISA Certified Arborists have in abundance. On the other hand, poor pruning can damage your tree, cause insect and disease problems, and even kill it.

Not all trees need regular pruning but many will need an occasional "hair cut" to look their best and stay strong and healthy. Give us a call at 914-214-7045 and we'll be happy to take a look at your trees and give you an assessment of what kind of pruning would be best.

We Do Not Top Trees

There are ANSI standards for tree pruning and tree trimming. The Certified Arborists at Hill Treekeepers follow these standards and industry best practices for tree pruning.

Because of this, we do not top trees. Topping permanently damages trees, weakens them, and leads to premature failure - not to mention that it looks awful!

AN ESSENTIAL PART OF TREE MAINTENANCE & SAFETY

Proper pruning is an essential part of tree maintenance and safety. Not only does it improve the overall appearance of your trees, it also helps to prevent tree breakage during New York's sometimes ferocious storms. Pruning can be done to open up your view, let in more sunlight, avoid interference with utility lines, correct structural problems, remove deadwood and diseased or infested branches, and much more.

One of the best investments you can make for your trees and your overall landscape is putting their health in the hands of certified arborists. Here at Hill Treekeepers, we offer tree trimming and tree pruning services for all types of trees in Dutchess, Orange, and Ulster Counties.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tree Pruning

Tree pruning is one of the most common types of tree service in the Hudson Valley area. Unfortunately, it's also the tree service that's most often done incorrectly, leaving homeowners with damaged, deformed, and unhealthy trees.

If you're thinking about getting your trees pruned, you probably have some questions about the timing, process, and more.

We always encourage our customers to learn what they can about proper tree pruning techniques before they hire a tree service company.

To help you understand the basics of tree trimming, we've put together answers to the questions we're most often asked. But if you have a different question, just give us a call!

When a tree should be pruned depends on many factors, including the tree species, its health, and your desired outcomes. However, winter will be a good time for most trees so it’s generally safe to plan on pruning during this timeframe.

If you feel overwhelmed by all this, or want to correct the pruning mistakes that, um, somebody might have made, call the arborists at Rayzor’s Edge Tree Service. We’ll be able to identify your trees, determine what kind of pruning they need, and recommend the best time to do the work.

We love trees and we’re here to help you love them too, even if that means braving the cold Connecticut winter weather to prune your trees!

Yes, you can! Winter is the dormant season for most plants and trees, which makes it an ideal time for pruning.

Cold temperatures and short daylight hours usher in dormancy and, like hibernating animals, trees and shrubs turn their energy use down to its lowest setting and settle in to snooze until spring.

You may associate winter with staying inside and doing your own bit of hibernating, but arborists take advantage of the season to work on trees. In fact, we are just as busy during the winter months as we are during the summer.

The type and size of power line, as well as proximity to the pruning we'll be doing, dictate how we will approach performing the work. Any job that involves pruning near a power line requires a thorough inspection by one of our experienced arborists. If necessary, we'll coordinate with the local power company to disconnect power to the line(s) in or near your tree.

Safety is always our first consideration when working near power lines so we take extra care to ensure our crews are safe. This might mean that scheduling your pruning job will be delayed while we make proper arrangements with the power company.

We do not top trees. Also called "hatracking", this process of cutting trees to make them shorter is not only harmful to the trees, but it's also illegal in most cities throughout South Florida.

We prefer to meet with you prior to starting work to make sure we all agree on exactly what's being done and the expected outcome. Plus, we love meeting our customers!

However, if you've already had a good conversation with our arborist and are not able to be present while work is being done, we can proceed with pruning work with your approval.

As a general rule, cutting off dead branches may help a tree, but every situation can be different. When done properly, cutting off a dead branch will allow the tree to focus on the healthy branches and promote more growth.

Often, you'll know when it's time to prune a tree.

For example, it may have an unattractive shape, branches may be hitting your roof, or low branches could be blocking your view or obstructing traffic and pedestrians.

Perhaps you're seeing deadwood throughout the tree, or broken or hanging branches that pose a safety risk.

Any time you think there may be a safety hazard, call an arborist for a tree inspection. Safety is always a good reason to prune a tree!

It depends on the age of your tree. Generally, for mature trees, you will need to prune them every 3 to 5 years. Younger trees should be pruned every 2 to 3 years.

Yes, the proper type of pruning can reduce the risk of damage from strong winds, such as during a hurricane.
